Community Safe Zone Training

Community Safe Zone Training

Friday, November 5, 2021 (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

The Rainbow Alliance Institute of the Northeast (R.A.I.N.) and the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce invite you to attend a free, in-person community Safe Zone workshop, which will be led by Dr. Helen H. Davis. In the interactive Safe Zone interactive workshop, participants will learn about basic LGBTQ+ terminology, information on gender-inclusive language, and best practices to make our businesses and our neighborhoods safe and welcoming for members of the LGBTQ+ community. The session will include scenarios and suggestions that attendees can directly apply in their workplaces, with their friends and relatives,  and when interacting with the general public. We will also provide information about resources and discuss ways that participants can serve as allies to provide meaningful, visible support for the LGBTQIAP+ community. This session is appropriate for members of the LGBTQIAP+ community who would like to learn more about how to support one another, and also for allies outside of the community who are committed to being a supportive resource for those within the community.

Dr. Davis (she/her) is an Associate Professor of English at Wilkes University, where she also teaches in the Women's and Gender Studies program. Dr. Davis founded and has coordinated the Wilkes University LGBTQ+ Awareness and Safe Space Ally program at Wilkes University since 2011, and has provided LGBTQ+ educational programming and support for King's College, Misericordia University, Susquehanna County public schools, the Rainbow Alliance, the Northeastern PA Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and many other community organizations. She also serves as the faculty advisor for the Wilkes Gender and Sexuality Alliance, and helped found and serves on the Wilkes University Council on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (CODIE). She also serves on the Executive Council for the International Society for the Study of Narrative and Co-chairs the ISSN's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Dr. Davis is also a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.
