Johnson College is seeking a Counselor. The Counselor is responsible for the hands-on facilitation of student success through the coordination of support activities related to counseling /disability services and other student resources that will help to facilitate learning strategies and strengthen the student’s engagement with the College. In addition to providing direct support and interventions for students, the Counselor will advise school leaders regarding school-wide practices and work with faculty members, students, and families to ensure that student health and learning are meeting the priority of the physical, social, and academic needs of our students.

Qualified candidates will posses a Master’s degree in Human Services field such as education, counseling, psychology, social work or related field with advance knowledge in disability services. A minimum of two years’ experience working with students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting. Demonstrated knowledge of current state and federal law and regulations related to the ADA, Section 504, The FHA, PA state law and of federal regulatory requirements.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist on intake and registration of students, including coordination of diagnostic tests and clinical assessments, and determine eligibility for services in consultation with appropriate offices and clinical consultants.
  • Assist on interactive/iterative processes to determine and document appropriate accommodations.
  • Ensure accommodations are following the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities.
  • Act as the point of contact for students who are requesting reasonable accommodations.
  • Reviews student requests for accommodations, as well as changes in approved accommodations, to determine what reasonable accommodations the student may be qualified to receive.
  • Promote awareness and educate staff, faculty and students regarding ADA accommodations.
  • Maintain confidential file for each student requesting accommodations, and coordinates student information with appropriate staff and faculty.
  • Maintain, update and make available information for obtaining accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty to support questions and concerns for accommodations.
  • Work with students regarding academic and personal challenges as they relate to student educational success and retention through individual or group appointments.
  • Assist Student Success Coaches as needed on issues regarding academic coaching, disability services, academic probation as well as departmental procedures and policy.
  • Assist with proctoring calendar, appointments, and volunteers.
  • Recommend policy and procedural changes intended to increase effectiveness and efficiency of the College as it relates to student success.
  • Assist in creating and managing Wellness Works workshops.
  • Collaborate with the entire Student Engagement team.
  • Assist enrollment with information regarding counseling and disabilities, attend recruitment events as needed.
  • Develop external partnerships with community organizations to build a relationship between the organization and Johnson College.
  • Participate and be an active member in assigned campus committees and task forces designed to address student success, retention, and graduation challenges.
  • Provide daily direction, oversight, and strategic leadership for student counseling services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficiency with using Microsoft Office software
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to relate effectively with students, institutional personnel & the public
  • Strong crisis assessment and crisis management skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of ethical and legal issues in mental health practice
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a stressful environment and as part of a multi-disciplinary team


EDUCATION: 

Master’s degree in human services field such as education, counseling, psychology, social work or related field with advance knowledge in disability services.
