Marywood University Library Receives Insight Into Diversity Magazine’s
2024 Library Excellence in Access and Diversity (LEAD) Award

Scranton, PA (January 12, 2024) — Marywood University’s Library received the 2024 Library Excellence in Access and Diversity (LEAD) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

The LEAD Award honors academic libraries’ programs and initiatives that encourage and support DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) across their campus. These include, but are not limited to research, technology, accessibility, exhibitions, and community outreach. Marywood University will be featured, along with 55 other recipients, in the March 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine.

“This award means a great deal to Marywood, and it demonstrates our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout the year,” said Sarah Sporko, Circulation Manager, noting that any faculty or staff member can collaborate with the library on displays.

Marywood’s Library was selected for the award based on its collaboration with the Marywood University Office of Diversity and Inclusion to create displays regarding important multicultural events throughout the year, including the following displays during the Fall 2023 semester: LGBTQIA+ History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Indian Heritage Month, and a celebration of Christmas, Hannukkah, and Kwanza. NativityMiguel School of Scranton students listened to Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanza library books being read by Marywood undergraduate students and then participated in a number of holiday activities.

“We know that many academic libraries are not always recognized for their dedication to diversity, inclusion, and access” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine. “We are proud to honor these college and university libraries as role models for other institutions of higher education.”
