Description

The Voices Project: How to Reduce Stereotypes and Prejudice
Presented by: Alicia Nordstrom, Professor at Misericordia University

The Voices Project is an empirically supported stigma reduction intervention that has been shown to reduce racist attitudes and mental health stigma (Nordstrom, 2015; Nordstrom & Goodfriend, in press). The intervention uses a narrative, storytelling approach of gathering real-world stories of stigmatized individuals to challenge common stereotypes and build relationships with people from social circles that are unfamiliar.  In its original version, The Voices Project involves having individuals rate their attitudes towards groups across different social categories (e.g., race/ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, gender, disability) and interview a person from a group from which they report moderate to high levels of prejudice. Based on the interview, the individual writes a brief memoir of the life of their interviewee from the first-person perspective.  Although initially used with college students, this flexible framework can be adapted for professional and business environments.
