Chamber of Interns: Meet the Author

Chamber of Interns: Meet the Author

Hello, my name is Nicholas Serra! I am currently working at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce as their communication and social media marketing intern. This is the first post of my blog series to document my journey with the chamber, and I thought that what better way to start than getting to know the author?
  • What university do you attend and what is your major?
I initially started my higher education at the University of Scranton, but soon transferred to Marywood University to finish out my degree in marketing and also take on an additional degree in graphic design.
  • How did you find out about the opening intern position at the Chamber, and what urged you to apply there?
I discovered the availability for this intern position through Marywood’s internship panel, which is at the disposal to all Marywood students. This position caught my eye, because being from the city of Wilkes-Barre I never knew entirely what the Chamber of Commerce did, but I did know that because of the Chamber many businesses had the opportunity to succeed when they might not have otherwise. It is for this reason I wanted to be a part of the Chamber. I wanted to be a part of something that helps my hometown’s community grow.
  • What are your responsibilities as a communication and social media marketing intern at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce?
I am still fairly new to the team at the Chamber, so my responsibilities have been growing with the time that I spend there. On an average day, I typically do email blasts or press releases, but I am also given a variety of other tasks that depend on what is happening in the Chamber on that given day.
  • What fun hobbies or interests do you have outside working at the Wilkes-Barre Chamber?
When I am not busy with my internship or homework from my college classes, I like to unwind. I do this by practicing my freestyle, since I am on the men's swim team at Marywood, doing independent graphic design projects, or playing guitar or piano.
  • What do you hope to get out of being a communication and social media marketing intern for the Chamber?
There are two main insights that I wanted to discover at my time working for the Chamber. The first is that I wanted to develop a better understanding of the Chamber of Commerce and how exactly they help our community. There are many ways they support Greater Wilkes-Barre and unfortunately many of them are overlooked, I feel. The second insight I wanted to gain is to see what it is like to be in the position of someone of business. This is my first internship I have worked, therefore, it is my first position in the business field.

This is just some of the basic things that I thought you should know about me, before proceeding further with my blog series. I look forward to continuing my journey at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce and I hope that you come along for the journey as well!
