From the Intern Desk: Ashlee Harry

Welcome back to the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce’s blog series, From the Intern Desk. Today, the blog will be featuring the last intern on staff. My name is Ashlee Harry and I am the Communications and Social Media Marketing intern.
I am an English major at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and this is my senior year. I will be graduating in May, 2019. I have been an intern with the Chamber since May, 2018.
As I have done in the previous blog posts, I answered the same questions that I asked the other interns.
How did you decide to apply as an intern for the Chamber?
“I applied for the Chamber after speaking with my adviser, Dr. Chin. Meghan is a Penn State Wilkes-Barre graduate and she is in charge of the internship program. I called her and did a phone interview and I began working for the Chamber in the summer. I asked to start early so I could start to learn everything once I started in the fall.”
What has been your most positive experience at work so far?
“My most positive experience so far has been the opportunity to meet all these incredible people in and out of the office. Between the Chamber events and the meetings, I have been able to meet and network with so many new people.”
Can you summarize your typical work day?“My typical day is coming in at 8:30am and talking with Meghan. If there is anything new, like press releases or editing opportunities, I assist her with these. If not, I continue working on this blog series by interviewing the interns and staff members.”
What do you hope to learn and accomplish here at the Chamber?
“My main goal when I came into this office was to learn another job area that my degree could take me. I found the more business aspect side of writing and editing here at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce. It is something that I could see myself doing once I graduate if an opportunity was there for me.”
Have you found a part of this internship that is pushing you toward a future career? What is it?
“The blog series has pushed me further with my writing skills. I also had to become used to interviewing people, which is not a bad thing. Also, my assignments from the summer allowed me to get more into the editing side, which I love to do.”
What are the other interns like?
“The interns this semester are just as awesome as the summer interns. Emelee and I know each other from school and all the classes we take together. Samantha works a different schedule than me, but I see her at Chamber events. She is really nice and fun to talk to.”
What has been your biggest take-away(s) from this experience?
“My biggest takeaway has been not to be afraid to try new things. I have had the ability to see different aspects of the Chamber and how they work as a unit. This is a job I did not really think about when I thought about an English major. It has opened my eyes and gave me more insight about jobs that I will look into after graduation.”
What advice would you give future Chamber interns?
“Go after every opportunity that comes your way here. The chamber offers so much to interns that you hurt yourself if you do not experience these events.”
Interesting Facts Time!
Some interesting facts about myself include my love of reading and writing. From that love, I have written three books and self-published two of them. They are called The Guardians and Ascension. In the free time, which comes occasionally, I like to relax and catch up on some of my TV shows or a movie. I try to read, but I do not always have the time.
My career goals are focused on getting hired at a publishing company to edit. I would love to then show them my work and have them publish it. Along with the chamber, I am also the Struthers Family Career Services Social Media intern at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Also on campus, my involvement in clubs includes:
  • Chair of Penn State Wilkes-Barre Benefiting THON
  • President of The Revolt, campus newspaper
  • Senator in Student Government Association
  • Blue and White Society Member
  • 4 Seasons Member
  • Lion Ambassador
