From the Intern Desk: Joe Boylan
Welcome back to our fall blog series, From the Intern Desk! This blog series will continue to feature our current staff members. Our next featured staff member is Joe Boylan.
Joe is the Executive Director of Wilkes-Barre Connect and has been with the Chamber for four years. A fun fact about Joe is that he attended Penn State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Science in Business with a concentration in Marketing/Management.
Joe described to me how the Chamber offers you the opportunity to help business grow in the region, while simultaneously helping grow- the community.
Question and Answer Time!
I had the opportunity to talk with Joe and learn more about his life and position here at the Chamber of Commerce and Wilkes-Barre Connect.
What has been your most positive experience from working here?
“The most positive experience has been the people I’ve had the good fortune to meet and the team that I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside.”
Can you summarize your typical work day?
“My typical work day is non-stop, but in a good way! We are doing some amazing things on a daily basis, where we are making NEPA a better place to live, work, and play.”
What advice would you give a student interested in interning at the Chamber?
“Don’t hesitate – apply today! No other organization can offer you an opportunity to make an introduction or provide experience in multiple industries and sectors like the Chamber.”
What are the other staff members like?
“All the other staff members are creative, driven, and passionate in their own way. Individually, we are all talented, but together we are an unstoppable force!”
What has been your biggest take-away(s) from working here?
“The biggest take away from working here is the ability to create positive change– whether it’s helping someone find a job, helping an entrepreneur launch a business, or attracting an international company to the region.”
What do you love the most about working here at the Chamber?
“I love my co-workers the most here at the Chamber. I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world. I love waking up and getting to work knowing we have each other’s backs. I learn something new every day from the team. They help me grow personally and professionally.”
Interesting Facts Time!
While we were talking, Joe also gave me more insight into his life. He loves music! There will not be a time during the day where he does not have music playing in the background. His work mood is based on the music being played that day. A little Bob Dylan to get creative, Jack Johnson to get focused, and some Pearl Jam to get Joe motivated.
Joe is on a few boards that capture his passion and drive to build a stronger community. He is the Vice Chair of the Maternal Family Health Services Board; a Penn State Wilkes-Barre Advisory Board Member; and a Board Member of the Wyoming Valley Challenger’s League.
In his free time, Joe tries to relax and enjoy life. He is a big Philly sports fans, so you can always find him at an Eagles game, or enjoying the Sixers, Flyers, and Phillies on TV. His daughter, Madeline, and he really enjoy movies and being creative. They enjoy drawing and painting, and there is nothing better than a bowl of popcorn and a good movie. Joe loves spending time with his friends and family because “there’s nobody better to help you through the good and bad times. Memories with them last a lifetime.”
