From the Intern Desk: Lauren Scott
Welcome all to the fall blog series called From the Intern Desk! This blog series will feature our current staff members along with the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce’s fall interns. Our first featured staff member is Lauren Scott.
Lauren is the Operations Manager for the Chamber and has held this position for a year and a half. A fun fact about Lauren is that she attended Lebanon Valley College and graduated with a degree in Elementary and Special Education with a minor in Spanish.
Lauren’s life at the Chamber began when she received a call from Meghan Flanagan, our Communications and Resource Manager, about an open position that she believed Lauren was the perfectly suited for. The call was out of the blue, but it came at the perfect time for Lauren. Fun Fact! Meghan and Lauren have been co-workers in the past. They both worked at Target together.
Question and Answer Time!
Lauren and I sat down to talk about her life here at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce.
What has been your most positive experience from working here?
“I have the opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the things happening in the community. With my job, I have to create flyers for many of the events. Canva has been my favorite tool for this.”
Can you summarize your typical work day?
“I usually come in and check my email. I then get Ellie Bartoli, the Chamber’s work experience student, situated with her daily work agenda. I send out board information, make flyers, and coordinate meetings. I also have to prep for meetings, update the community calendar and regular calendar. One aspect of my job is that I take the minutes for every meeting, which consists of both board and committee meetings.”
What advice would you give a student interested in interning at the Chamber?
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Also, attend as many events that we host as possible. Don’t be afraid to try new things and learn new skills.
What are the other staff members like?
“They are like a little family. We all tease each other, prank each other, and most importantly, we get along with each other. Everyone brings their different skill sets to the table. I get to bring my major to the table when I work with the interns.”
What has been your biggest take-away(s) from working here?
“The biggest takeaway is that there is a lot more going on in the community then I thought before. There is so much stuff going on behind the scenes. I have learned a lot about the Chamber as an organization and our impact on the community.”
What do you love the most about working here at the Chamber?
“I love the variety of stuff that you end up doing. Everyone is a jack of all trades because we are a small unit. I love our little weird family here!”
Interesting Facts Time!
While we were talking, Lauren also gave me more insight into her life. She loves to read and listen to music. Lauren also describes herself as a “spinner, weaver, knitter, dyer, which is all labeled as fiber arts.” She is extremely crafty as a fiber artist. Lauren also loves hanging out with her little buddy/nephew, Riley. She is family-oriented, which is seen in and out of the office.
In her free time, Lauren does many of the interests I have just listed. One cool thing about Lauren is that she knits many of the gifts she gives to people for Christmas and/or birthdays. She recently just made a gift for her co-worker Matt’s baby shower.
She also loves to travel, which is great when it comes to her nephew, Riley. The two of them go to shows and events centered on his favorite things. I bet the next show or event they go to will be with PJ Masks. The two of them watch PJ Masks all the time!
Lauren attends every single board and committee meeting that the Chamber has to offer. She takes the minutes and attendance for every one of them. Outside of the Chamber, Lauren is also in the Leadership Wilkes-Barre Class of 2019.
