Introducing the Osterhout Free Library, our 2025 Community Advancement Award recipient!

Since 1887, The Osterhout Free Library has been a cornerstone of education and programming in Downtown Wilkes-Barre. In addition to the central library, they also operate branches in South Wilkes-Barre, North Wilkes-Barre, and Plains, allowing easy access for those living all across the city. Being a member of the Luzerne County Library System, they provide free materials and services for residents of the entire county. As the recipient of the Community Advancement Award, the Osterhout has demonstrated their importance in enhancing the economic vitality, quality of place, and overall community well-being in our area.

The library supports workforce development through offering free access to technology such as the BlueCareer database, job search resources, resume assistance, and digital literacy training. Through partnerships with local nonprofits and workforce agencies, the library also hosts job fairs, entrepreneurship workshops, and financial literacy sessions. These initiatives directly equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to enter or re-enter the workforce, start businesses, and improve their financial stability. Their program, Adulting 101, hosted in partnership with the Wilkes-Barre Health Department, get teens and young adults prepared for all that life brings in adulthood.

Through their events, such as the annual Book Sale, literary festivals, author talks, and art displays, the library also contributes to the cultural and intellectual fabric of the community, making it a more attractive place to live, work, and visit. Its historic main building in downtown Wilkes-Barre, converted from the former First Presbyterian Church building, serves not only as an architectural landmark, but also as a vibrant gathering space that attracts over 70,000 visitors annually.

With a strong focus on inclusivity, lifelong learning, and youth engagement, the library is deeply committed to the well-being of our community. Through early childhood literacy programs like "Story Time" and summer reading initiatives, the Osterhout helps lay the foundation for educational success. Its outreach efforts to underserved populations, including seniors, immigrants, and low-income families, ensure equitable access to resources that support mental health, education, and personal development. Their programs and services are supported by hundreds of volunteers annually, engaging students, seniors, and civic groups.

The Osterhout leads with a deep sense of purpose, recognizing that equitable access to information, education, and opportunity is foundational to a thriving community. Through their efforts, the library has become more than an information center—it’s a trusted advocate for lifelong learning, public health, and community advancement.
