The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA - Charitable Organization of the Year, sponsored by Borton-Lawson

“United Way’s partnership with the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA has helped create opportunities to connect low-income children of all ages with high-quality learning experiences. The expertise of the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA team helps ensure school readiness, academic impact, and has worked to close the achievement gap in summer learning in the Wyoming Valley.” - Jennifer R. Deemer, Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of Wyoming Valley

"The Wilkes-Barre YMCA gave the Kindergarten Students of Solomon-Plains Elementary the opportunity to investigate nature through hands-on experiences by providing funding for field trips to YMCA Camp Kresge. The students learned to use their senses to explore where animals live and how they build their homes. The YMCA Camp Kresge is a perfect place for any child to explore nature first hand." - Maria Hayward, Kindergarten Teacher at Solomon-Plains Elementary

The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA was originally founded on May 8, 1863, to foster recreational and religious programs in the community. The YMCA was located in various sites in downtown Wilkes-Barre. Today, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA serves more than 10,000 kids and teens, providing a wide range of activities to nurture their potential. This includes early childhood
education, before and after school programs, achievement gap initiatives, youth sports and arts programming, summer day camp, overnight camp, and many other programs. In 2017, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA was awarded more than $825,000 in financial assistance to low-income children, adults, and families from the community.

With a focus on programs that offer holistic benefits, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA promotes healthy lifestyles, strong families, develops leadership in youth, assists in community
Development and builds international understanding. The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA has formed strong partnerships throughout the community that they serve. Through their work with local businesses, school districts, colleges, and universities, they offer programming and membership options that benefit students and provide essential programs and services to community members of all ages and backgrounds for over 150 years.

It inspires them to believe in themselves, know that they can do anything they set their mind to, and that their circumstances and lives that they live do not define their future.” - Mary Tranguch, Teacher, for Wilkes Barre Area & Site Director at Power Scholars Academy
