Meet the Award Recipients: Candy's Place, a Cancer Wellness Center, Charitable Organization of the Year
"When I established Candy's Place in memory of my sister Candy who died of cancer in 1997, I had no idea that my original concept would develop into what it is today. Over the past 20 years, with a lot of community support, this non-profit organization continues its mission of helping cancer patients and their families. In 2005, when the organization outgrew the small office at the Kirby Health Center, Rob Mericle offered larger space in one of his buildings, paid for the entire cost of the renovations and since that time, Rob & Kim Mericle have provided annual contributions to help support the continued operations of the Center… We're basically rent-free! On behalf of my family and our Board of Directors…THANK YOU to the community for all of the support.”
- Penny Cunningham, Founder, Candy’s Place
Candy's Place, a Cancer Wellness Center, is a place where cancer patients and their families can find solace and support in a safe, non-threatening, home-like environment. Since its foundation in 1998, thousands have benefited from the services provided at Candy's Place. These services--which range from physical to emotional support--offer a safe haven where patients find the help they need in an effort to guide them through their journey.
All programs and services are free to cancer patients and their caregivers and are open to the public for a small fee. These programs and services include exercise classes, support groups, educational workshops, cancer resources, lending library, wig and accessories boutique, oncology massage, reiki, reflexology, vibrational sound therapy, and facial therapies. Candy's Place also offers one-on-one training sessions, yoga, meditation, and cardio classes.
Candy’s Place has carefully chosen to address the physical, emotional, and social needs for those diagnosed with cancer to enhance their medical treatment. Candy's Place offers a loving and non-threatening atmosphere where cancer patients feel free to visit and not only find the answers they seek, but make life-long friendships with the staff and volunteers as well as with their fellow cancer patients.
“What makes us unique is that we are able to provide our services for free not only to those battling cancer, but to their caregivers as well. While the patients always come first the caregivers are important to us as well. You don’t really find a place that assists both patient and caregiver. For us to have the ability to serve both I think is unique in its own way.”
- Nicole Hapshe, MSW, Director, Candy’s Place
