Meet the Award Recipients: Wilkes University, Pride of Place Award

“The Wilkes University Karambelas Media Center and Sordoni Art Gallery is a terrific addition to South Main Street and the Wilkes-Barre community.  The building is much more than a project.  It is a true collaboration of the University’s media, communications and art gallery to put these robust programs on display for the entire University and Wilkes-Barre communities.  The facility is a great example of the University’s partnering spirit and commitment to the Wyoming Valley.  Borton-Lawson was proud to work with the University on this transformational project.”
- Patrick Endler, Vice President, Borton-Lawson

Wilkes University’s newest campus facility is located at 141 South Main Street, transforming key downtown space into a premier educational asset. Located in the facility is the new Sordoni Art Gallery. The $3 million, 7,000-square-foot gallery is the culmination of a revitalization plan to enrich the arts for students, faculty and staff while contributing to cultural life in the greater Wilkes-Barre area. More than double the size of the former gallery, the new space is outfitted for high-end national art exhibits and includes versatile opportunities for teaching and learning. Neighboring the gallery is the Clayton and Theresa Karambelas Media and Communication Center. The $4 million, 14,000-square-foot center will house the award-winning communication studies program, consolidating all learning activities into one modern facility where students can collaborate across media disciplines. This latest investment continues to expand Wilkes University’s footprint in downtown Wilkes-Barre while offering unique cultural and educational opportunities to students and the local community.

“Our newest facility at 141 South Main Street continues to position Wilkes University as a unique institution, offering all of the activities of a large university in the atmosphere of a small college. Combining Wilkes’ strengths in the communication and visual arts, 141 South Main Street provides the opportunity for students to enjoy the likes of Andy Warhol in the Sordoni Art Gallery while listening to our student-run radio station in the Karambelas Media and Communication Center. This investment is not just an example of our commitment to our students and host community. It also illustrates our enduring commitment to the arts.”
- Dr. Patrick F. Leahy, President, Wilkes University
