MEET THE CONNECT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR- JOSEPH BOYLAN

MEET THE CONNECT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR- JOSEPH BOYLAN

I was delighted to interview my first Wilkes-Barre Connect staff member, Joseph Boylan. Although this is a series about our interns, I thought it would be fun to also interview one of the staff in charge of these young professionals. It was a joy to learn more about what goes on inside the walls of the somewhat hidden THINK Center building. Not only did I learn more about Joe, but I got a nice tour of the office (it’s pretty darn neat if you’ve never been in it). A huge thank you to Joe for giving his time to me!

Q: What is your name? Where did you attend college and what is your major?
A: My name is Joseph Boylan and I graduated from Penn State University with a marketing degree specializing in management. (WE ARE)

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? (other interesting facts)
A: In my spare time, I love to spend time with my daughter Madeline. The two of us are huge movie buffs.

When I asked Joe about their favorite movie to watch together, he quickly replied with the Avengers series.

Q: What are some other interesting facts about yourself?
A: I love Philadelphia sports! I’m a huge fan of the Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, and Phillies. I really enjoy listening to all types of music- anything but country. My favorite artists are Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam.

Q: Do you have another job? Are you involved in any other organizations?
A: I am currently the Executive Director of Wilkes Barre Connect. I am also involved in many boards such as holding the position of Vice Chair of Maternal & Family Health Services, the YMCA, Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce, Penn State Wilkes-Barre Advisory Board, and Wyoming Valley Challengers.

Q: What brought you to the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce?
A. I came to Wilkes-Barre Connect in 2014. At the time I was hired as a consultant, but eventually became the Vice President in Economic Development. Before coming to the Chamber, I worked at Wilkes University as a research analyst. I was also formally employed at the Institute of Public Policy and Economic Development.

Impressively, Joe was the District Director in the Pennsylvania Senate, and also helped launch two private companies.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you at the Chamber?
A: At the THINK Center, I typically work with students throughout the day. Besides guiding my students, I also spend a lot of time interacting with businesses and local entrepreneurs. It’s important for me to stay true to what Connect is. My day is also topped off with countless emails and meetings.

                                                   “Helping people Connect.”

Q: One word to describe your experience?
A: “Inspiring.”

Q: What are your goals here at the THINK Center?
A: It is my ultimate goal to make Northeastern Pennsylvania a hub of innovation and creativity.

Q: Any tips for others who might be thinking about the internship?
A: It is the perfect opportunity. The Chamber offers networking opportunities, personal challenges, and the ability for each person who walks through the THINK center to grow themselves professionally. So many pathways can be opened up by securing an internship here.
