The next Wilkes-Barre Connect intern on deck is Gordon Roberts. Gordon is a fellow Penn State Wilkes-Barre student like myself. With an Associate’s degree in hand, Gordon is looking forward to graduating this May. He also juggles his own business and part-time job at Champs Sports along with school and interning. Thanks to Gordon for telling me his story!

 

Q. What is your name? Where did you attend college and what is your major? 
A: My name is Gordon Roberts. I began my higher education at Luzerne County Community College where I earned an Associate’s degree in General Studies. I then decided to further my education at Penn State University Wilkes-Barre where I am a senior set to graduate in May with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management & Marketing. 
 
Q. What do you like to do in your spare time? (other interesting facts) 
 A. In my spare time you can find me fishing rivers, creeks, and tributaries throughout NEPA. I also enjoy reading and spending quality time with family, friends, and loved ones.  

Q. Do you have another job? Are you involved in any other organizations? 
 A. I have been a retail sales associate at Champs Sports for over 5 years. I also started my own business where I specialize in re-selling of limited-edition sneakers and clothing, I have been doing this for nearly 9 years.  
 
Q. What brought you to the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce? 
A. After meeting Joseph Boylan through a capstone course project at Penn State, I learned about the “Connect” program and instantly knew that I wanted to get involved to drive entrepreneurship & economic development right here in NEPA. 
 
Q. What does a typical day look like for you at the Chamber? 
A. A typical day starts out with meeting new “Connect” clients, determining their needs and goals, building a strategy around that and then referring them to our “Connect” partners all while acting as a staff to each business.  

Q. One word to describe your experience? 
A. “Amazing.” 
 
Q. What are your goals after graduation? 
A. My long-term career goal is to become a superyacht broker. I want to travel the world and experience different cultures while building my professional network.  
 
Q. Any tips for others who might be thinking about the internship? 
A. The best advice I can give is to show initiative, let others know that you want to get involved and be sure to take the steps to let that be known. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions- that is extremely important when thinking about any internship or job.
