We Have Work To Do.
In 2019, we embarked on a Chamber Strategic Plan to re-imagine a better collective future for all in our community. A key pillar established in that plan was in diversity, inclusion, and equality as a core value to who we are and what we do as a Chamber and as a community. The establishment in that plan of our Diversity Council was a call to action and requires us as individual leaders to drive a unified voice to step up, connect, and acknowledge our differences.
Today, as we witness the recent tragedies of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor that have highlighted racial and social injustice in our nation, the establishment of the Chamber’s Diversity Council has never been more relevant. The responding peaceful protests conducted by hundreds of thousands of American citizens are insisting that we, as a nation, do better and live up to the core principles and values carved into our national ethos of equality, inclusion, freedom, and diversity as written by our founders in the Charters of Freedom –The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and The Bill of Rights.
Dr. Martin Luther King once said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." It is our hope that the protests shine as a beacon to equality for all and truly create Dr. King’s “I have a dream” for all no matter their color, ethnicity, creed, gender, or orientation. We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement and the unifying call to action for equal and social justice, and we do so in honor of those who have suffered at the hands of inequality, bigotry, and discord.
Our Chamber Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council is ready to serve as a positive change agent in the community to promote diversity, inclusion, and equality. We realize that, in planting these seeds, we have much work to do together to see this vision realized within our organization. We are committed to seeing that vision realized and stand committed to support efforts to foster dialogue, end racism, seek justice, and create a more prosperous and united community for all. Sincerely,
Your Chamber Team
