Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA Adds Evening Water Aerobics Hours in Program Free To Seniors

WILKES-BARRE, 8/2/2024- The Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA has added two additional evening Water Aerobics classes to the organization’s current AFAP (Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program) schedule. These evening classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 7:15 pm in the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA Pool. This brings our total number of AFAP classes up to 8 weekly at the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA and 6 weekly at the Greater Pittston YMCA.

The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is an evidence based program allowing participants with arthritis and other mobility challenges a safe and effective way to exercise. The program offers multiple components to help reduce pain and stiffness and to maintain or improve mobility, muscle strength, and functional ability. This program targets mainly adults with arthritis, related rheumatic diseases or musculoskeletal conditions,,ranging from people who are older, sedentary, and very limited by impaired joint mobility to those who are relatively active with only mild joint involvement.

The benefits of attending an AFAP class include, improving joint range of motion, muscle strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness. .AFAP participants have also reported improved physical function and quality of life. Attending at least two classes per week will result in greater improvements in quality of life, physical function, well-being, and mood.

AFAP is one of our most popular Co-Pilot classes that we offer at the YMCA. Our Co-Pilot classes are offered free of charge for people over the age of 60 thanks to a partnership with the Area Agency of Aging. AFAP classes are also popular for the social connections seniors make along with exercise. AFAPers come together monthly to enjoy potlucks, outings, and special events like Aqua Zumba. Evening classes will provide additional opportunities for people to enjoy AFAP, including seniors who work or watch their grandchildren during the day.
