Join North Branch Land Trust for a Special Event: Bird Walk & Bluebird House Craft

[Foster Twp, Luzerne County] – North Branch Land Trust invites nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and families to join in our Bird Walk & Bluebird House Craft event. On Saturday, April 12, participants will walk the paths of the George and Lillian Picton Wildlife Sanctuary, where participants will learn how to use birding apps to help identify local birds right on their phones and then “migrate” indoors to the Picton Preserve’s meeting space to decorate a bluebird birdhouse for their own backyard.

Participants at the April 12th event will have the opportunity to learn more about the downloadable phone applications: eBird, Merlin Bird ID, and Audubon that are designed to help identify birds, keep track of your bird list, along with contributing valuable data about bird migration and habitats to Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Attendees will walk the trails of Picton Preserve (1.5miles, easy rating) to spot the spring migrating birds without disturbing them, allowing attendees to use their phone apps, binoculars, and cameras to record the beautiful birds.

After the walk, there will be an indoor crafting session where participants will decorate a bluebird birdhouse to take home for their backyard. Malarkey and other members of the Land Trust staff will also be present to share more information on native bird habitat and houses so you can support your backyard birds year-round. North Branch Land Trust will provide all the supplies needed for birdhouse customization.

Registration cost is $30 and includes take home birdhouse and decoration supplies. Spaces are limited, so be sure to sign up early! To register, visit nblt.org/events. Members are reminded to check their email for their discount code.

Please dress appropriately for outdoor activities and bring binoculars if you’d like a closer view of our local wildlife. This is a great way to enjoy nature, learn more about important bird conservation efforts, and make memories with family and friends.

Leah Malarkey, Environmental Education Coordinator: “Bird watching is a popular hobby of the pastime and the present. Many people find joy in taking a walk to observe birds while in their natural habitat. It is one great way to connect with our world and the living animals around us. Bird watching can be done in many forms, by simply watching from your kitchen windows, alone with binoculars, or with a group enjoying the presence of others and their excitement”.

Emma Thompson, Senior Director of Conservation and Operations: “Birding is a great and interactive way to engage with nature. There are so many species to learn, and North Branch Land Trust is excited to be offering events for people to experience the natural world. Through exposure there is appreciation and through appreciation there is care. We need more people to care about the natural resources of Northeastern PA.”
