Misericordia University Hosts Free Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshops in Celebration of Women’s History Month
DALLAS, PA - In celebration of Women’s History Month, Misericordia University invites the public to participate in two free egg decorating workshops led by local artist Marianne Bump Lurie, honoring the ancient art of pysanky—a tradition originally practiced only by women in premodern Ukraine.
Both workshops will explore the cultural significance and hands-on techniques of decorating hollowed-out eggs using wax and dye in this rich Slavic tradition.
● Friday, April 4, 3–5 p.m. – Old World “Tear Drop” Style Easter Eggs Participants will learn the “drop-pull” technique using melted beeswax and a stylus to create intricate, symmetrical designs. Students will complete 2–3 eggs and may purchase additional materials to continue the practice at home.
● Saturday, April 5, 2–5 p.m. – How to Decorate Beautiful Ukrainian Easter Eggs This beginner-friendly class offers step-by-step instruction in the batik-style method of decorating pysanky, with insights into the history, legends, and symbolism behind the art form. All materials provided.
The workshops will be held on the Misericordia University campus in the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery. Space is limited. To register, contact Gallery Director Laine Little at ArtGallery@misericordia.edu or (570) 674-6250.
This program is supported in part by a Creative Sector Flex Fund Grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered regionally by The Armature, with funding from the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
